How to Throw Axes

Axe Throwing: The Basics

Axe Throwing is sweeping the nation!

Axe throwing is an excellent choice for recreation and exercise.  Fun for the family and uniquely compelling, folks across the United States have fallen in love with Axe Throwing!

If you’re looking to give it a try we created a list of Basic Tips to get you started!

Hatchet throwing can be enjoyed year round in the back yard or in the woods. For centuries Native Americans and Mountain Men have used axes for hunting, chopping firewood, and protection. Now they can even be used for recreational fun! With these basic skills you can learn to throw an axe like a pro!

Check your Distance from the Target

Stand between 12 and 14 feet from the target.  You want the hatchet to make one full rotation.  As the hatchet spins, you want it to stick on that complete rotation.

Various sizes of axes and hatchets may require you to stand further away from the target.  Always use your best judgement!

Remember these 2 Axe Throwing Safety Rules

Don’t throw if someone is in front of you or at least 6 feet from the target. Think of the axe as if it were a loaded gun.  Just don’t point it at people!

Don’t sharpen your blade to the point that you could cut yourself.  If your axe is slicing hairs it may be too sharp for reasonable use!

Grip the Axe Handle Firmly

Hold the handle like you mean it!  Some folks think of their grasp as similar to a baseball bat.  Here at Buy Axes Online we recommend the “Southern Style” of single handed hatchet throwing.  Hold the axe comfortably near the Knob.

The Basic Axe Throwing Technique

This is the most simple means of throwing an axe.  This method is often taught to first time axe throwers.

Step 1

Place both hands firmly towards the knob of the axe.  You want to keep the blade perfectly straight.

Step 2

Bring the axe over your head. This motion is similar to throwing a soccer ball over your head.  Lean back a bit, raise your arms, and draw the axe towards your back.

Step 3

Quickly bring the axe forward.  Extend your arms forward and release when the axe is nearly horizontal.  Practice this part as you improve your skill!

Now get out there and throw some axes!
